Greetings from a reformed cowboy action shooter.

Well, not so much so reformed as I moved and don't have a club nearby anymore.  Now living in lovely Van Buren, Missouri.  Anyway, the boys and I have started to build AR 15 variants, both for hunting and general shooting.  My oldest boy is in the Marine Corps, and the youngest is a junior in high school.  I have some pictures to share below, and I'll ask for advice on the latest builds. Sorry about the quality of the pics, there were taken in my reloading shop and things are still a bit unorganized.

Here is my first AR, a Colt Target Match HBAR that I bought a few years ago (before the cowboy action shooting took hold):

Below is the first "built" AR that we put together over the holidays.
- Surplus Arms and Ammo lower receiver
- DPMS Lower Parts Kit
- Pre built upper from Surplus Arms and Ammo including a YHM Free Float Quad Rail. Black Hole Weaponry barrel, and other miscellaneous stuff
- Red Dot and Flashlight from Primary Arms

And here is the third build.  My Marine is heading out to Afghanistan next month, and he put together a list (along with the rest of the platoon, it seems) for the new rifle which we're going to build.  He wants a reliable carbine, and has been drooling over the .300 Blackout.  I'm funding his build, and he'll pay me back after deployment (so he says)

As you see, he selected mostly Magpul accessories, along with the Adams Arms Gas Piston Kit and a Black Rain Ordinance .300 BO barrel that my local shop just happened to have in stock.  Comments are most certainly welcome.

Finally, my youngest wants to build an AR for longer range plinking and deer hunting.  He's also leaning towards a .300 Blackout barrel (20') and a DMR type build.  I'll have a list of parts developed soon.

The AR forum has been so helpful, and I really appreciate all the input.  I hope the pictures show up, first time trying this and they aren't in the preview.

Nice stuff.  Your homebuilts look much nicer than mine.  Godspeed to your son.

im not super conversant with the variants specs, but i think that a 20" barrel in 300BLK is sort of counter intuitive, I think one of the selling points of 300BLK is better velocity out of shorter barrels?

someone more knowledgeable will be along in a second to clarify things.

Interesting.  I'll have to do some more research on that.  My youngest keeps vacillating between .300 and 6.8 spc for his rifle, and he seems sold on a 20 in barrel.  I think he'll do more target shooting than deer hunting with it, as we're both bow hunters at heart.

Big Bro wants him to build a DMR, but when I start adding in all the parts it gets expensive quick.
