Hello All,
I'm assembling a parts list for my latest AR build. I'm looking to build something that resembles the latest SOPMOD Block II design. However, I'm not looking to build an exact "clone" I'm willing to substitute parts if I can get improved performance if possible? Here is a thread going on in another forum to see what I'm referring to: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118/541606_M4A1_SOPMOD_Block_II_clone_picture_thread.html My current parts list is as follows: Daniel Defense Upper and Lower Receivers G and R Tactical Lower Parts Kit Bravo Company USA Mid-Length Forged Lightweight 14.5" Barrel, with pinned A2X Flash Hider Daniel Defense RIS II 12" FDE Handguard Bravo Company USA "Gunfighter" Charging Handle Daniel Defense Low-Profile Gas Block w/ Mid-Length Gas Tube LMT Enhanced Bolt Carrier Group LMT SOPMOD Stock I have yet to purchase any items in that list, it's just what I've put together so far. Feel free to recommend a replacement or addition that I don't have listed. I'm looking for super solid reliability/durability. I don't have iron sights listed yet because I'm still undecided, I understand to build a proper SOPMOD weapon it would have KAC flip up sights but are they really preferred over offerings from Troy, Magpul, or someone else? Please recommend something, of course I'd like to be able to co-witness them through the EOTech should something happen to it, that's probably a given with any BUIS now though? I could also use some help on a good trigger recommendation. As I said above I'm not looking for an exact clone so please don't jump on me and say "you should have this over that" I'm completely willing to swap something out for an improved design or easier use but not just because Delta or the SEALs have it that way. I know I've asked a lot of questions but this will be my most serious investment and I don't want to be regretting that I saved a few dollars and cost myself in the end. Also what about various coatings on the weapon? The Daniel Defense upper already comes chrome lined, and the LMT BCG has various heat treats and coatings, would it be worth it to have the upper receiver and BCG Ion-Bonded or some other coating? Thank you all for any help |

Just to update my own thread, I did some more reading on other's builds and took a look at Rainier Arms' page. I changed my parts around some, rather than using Daniel Defense upper/lower receivers, I'm going to run Noveske matched upper/lower receiver set and one of their 14.5" barrels. They claim that the upper and lower receiver are "matched" and are fitted together for a very tight fit. Is it worth the extra money to buy a "fitted" set, if an upper and lower are both forged from reputable manufacturers and are within spec shouldn't they fit pretty well together?
Thank you all again for any help. Iggy |

In general a loose fit between the receivers does not degrade accuracy; however it definitely affects the shooter’s perception of the weapon.
Matched receivers are tight in the beginning, but loosen up over time. Matched receivers are generally fitted together by the manufacturer and may not be interchangeable with mil-spec receivers. I buy my receivers from reputable manufacturers and some fit very well together, most acceptably, and some very badly. AFAIK if one buys both receivers from the same manufacturer the odds are the fit will be good. There are many good FCGs out there, but I have been using Geissele SSAs. It is a fixed trigger with no adjustments to come loose and it is the semi-auto clone of their combat proven select fire FCG. |

Regarding the matched receivers, do you think it would be worth buying an upper and lower in what the manufacturer calls "matched" ? I thought Noveske was a well respected name and made solid mIl-spec stuff, are you saying they might be made to their own specs? Would I be better off getting the Daniel Defense receivers?
Does anyone have any recommendations on good BUIS? |

To me for a 14.5” barrel it would not be ‘worth it’.
Call them and ask how they match receivers. Potentially they could simply trial fit different receivers until they find a tight fit. The mil-spec is for combat weapons not match rifles. Also all machining operations have tolerances, the mil-spec allows for this. You have the same issues regardless who you order from. Good is definitely in the eye of the beholder on BUIS. I believe on the Rainier Arms website they are described as a "matched" set, upper and lower receiver and not a "match set" as in National Match. Here is the link, they quote "Mil-spec" tolerances it appears.
http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2029 I sent them an email inquiring is the "extended feed ramps" in the upper receiver were slang for M4 style feed ramps, other than that they appear to be simliar to any other good receivers, Daniel Defense, YHM..... |
