First time poster and AR builder here.  I’ve done a lot of research prior to attempting my build but the info out there is overwhelming and I figure I better ask for some advice.  I’d like to get it right the first time and would greatly appreciate any criticism of my plan prior to starting the build.

I have a stripped S&W M&P receiver.  I plan to build the lower myself and then add a complete upper later when I can afford it.  I plan to order a lower parts kit from Spikes and an A2 Buttstock (I live in NJ so can’t have a collapsible stock) assembly from Rock River Arms.  I noticed that there are ‘Mil-Spec’ and ‘Commercial’ size buffer tubes??  Does anyone know which I need for the S&W?  I have a good amount of hand tools including roll pin punches, brass hammers, etc., but do not own a castle nut wrench.

I eventually will order a complete upper and am leaning towards a mid-length system with 16” barrel.  I’d like to set it up with a traditional scope on the top rail and add the 45 degree off-set iron sights.  I believe I will need an A4 style upper with front gas block rail (no fixed front sight) to accommodate this set up.  Although I’m not sure if I will need a full-length top rail to fit both the scope rings and the off-set iron rear sight.  Will the A4 style upper with partial top rail have enough room for rings and a rear sight?

I have boxes full of parts that I don’t / didn’t need from other firearm projects and I’d like to avoid as many mistakes as possible when building the AR.  Any suggestions, comments, or criticism of my plan would be a big help.

if you like the look of the collapsible stocks available, you can get one and pin it. that's the route i went.

the buffer tube––-you just have to match it to the stock you get, be it commercial or mil-spec.

Fellow prisoner of the state of NJ, thanks for the response.

A collapsible stock would be my first choice but since we can't legally own one I thought I could take advantage of the interior space of the A2 stock to keep some spare parts or cleaning supplies.

Thanks for insight into the size of the buffer tube.  I thought it was specific to the threads in the receiver, not the stock itself.

threads in the receiver are the same on all lowers AFAIK. just get what you like and you're good to go.

......pinning the stock isn't all that hard. you just need an 1/8" drill bit and a 1/8" roll pin. epoxy the ends of the pin after it's installed, and the local authorities will be happy :)
