The barrel extension is what really matters.
On the M4 ramps, there is a larger area to help feed the bullet tip. This also matches the ramp cut into the upper receiver, directly bellow and in line with the barrel extension feed ramps.
If your barrel has M4 feed ramps, it can run with a standard receiver (that lacks the cuts) as well as the upper receiver that does have the cuts.

On rifle type barrel extensions, the feed ramp area is not as pronounced. The upper receiver is not cut for ramps. If you fit a M4 cut receiver with a rifle barrel extension, it can cause misfeeding....the bullet tip follows the M4 cut in the receiver and gets caught against the rifle barrel extension. Not good.

Match the barrel extension to the upper receiver and it all works out. Someone will be along shortly to post the picture showing the different ramp/barrel set-ups. Found it.

main thing to remember is: M4 ramped barrel can go on either receiver––––- M4 ramped receiver has to have M4 ramped barrel

if you plan on shooting heavier/longer rounds then you should just buy the right upper and barrel extensions.

people with metal working skills/tools have cut them. I done one before, and it turned out rather nice. but certainly not for the begginer.
