I'm building my first AR and am looking into stripped lowers now. I am confused on the difference between a "multical" lower and just a lower. Is there even a difference?

There is no difference unless the lower is marked for .308. Cal Multi and .223/5.56 are the same.

pretty much the same thing. but if you get an upper thats chambered for .223 you wont be able to shoot 5.56 rounds out of it.
i'm pretty sure that all uppers are 5.56 anyway, but its just something to keep in mind

multical lowers are intended for those wonderful places where you have to have the receiver marked for the caliber you're shooting. For example, 9mm, 50 beowulf etc. Otherwise it's just like any standard .223/5.56 lower.

The lower is the ONLY part that MUST go through an FFL since it has the serial number. There is also the manufacturer, company location, and caliber required on the lower (i think from the ATF Publication 5300.4). Since there are members that make .223, 5.56, 6.5 Grendal, and 6.8 SPC (did I forget some...Of course) from this lower, then the statement of MULTI CAL makes sense. The lower really isn't changed - It's the bolt and barrel.

Rest at ease on the fact that MULTI CAL is on the lower.
