Pinned would be best but requires drilling.

Pinned is better....more solid, very little chance of it shaking loose under hard use.

I like pinned ones on my SHTF/hard use type rifles.

I have several clamp on and set screw types on other builds and they work just fine.

I think technically Clamp style is best.

A solid well made clamp style is just as strong as pinned (certain clamp styles will not torque even with enough force to break the barrel index pin)

both pinned and set screw types can create stress points in the barrel.

but between the set screw and pinned.... i would use set screw for a LP and pinned for a FSB.

What kind of gun? What range, what target?

If it's a long free float over a mid length, mostly what you get are set screwed, unless you cut down the existing pinned front sight. If you're shooting NM, a set screwed front sight is the norm, you center it getting zeroed, then use the normal W&E knobs in a match.

Combat/CQB/duty? Pinned only. Smacking the FSB in vehicle hatches, doorways, or on the other guys helmet, it needs to be extremely secure.

There is no best, if you search long enough, you find one is better that the other because of what it does, and in some rare case, neither would be any good - such as a pistol.

Pinned would be the strongest.  If you are a "range warrior" then any will do since the rifle won't see the abuse that a duty rifle will.
