Hi All,
Originally wanted to purchase a second complete rifle, but won't have the funds for some time. I am limited to the 1 AR at this time. It's a BM M4 that I swapped out the upper for a Henderson flat top mounted with an Eotech 512 and YHM rear flip up (it has a fixed fsb). I am thinking maybe I could spend less money and just upgrade parts for reliability purposes (or purchase parts to keep on hand until the current ones fail). I've been reading about necessary parts to have such as bolt and carrier and a lpk. From what I've read RRA has decent lower parts. I was thinking Spikes for the bolt & carrier. One question I have is about the buffer tube. It seems the commercial tube (what I have) it extruded to size, whereas the milspec tube is milled down to its final size. I was reading that the receiver threading is different b/n the two and and concerned about proper fit into the lower. So my two questions so far are 1. Do lowers accept commercial OR milspec tubes? 2. Are milspec tubes significantly better or is it a non issue? Thanks, -Coop |

2- the only issue i have found in buffer tubes is that you have to make sure which one you stock takes before you buy it. i have found there are more options with a milspec tube.
edit- the milspec tube will be flat on the rear portion whereas the commercial tube is angled on the back. along with the OD being different between the two. mil-spec (1.14" diameter) and commercial (1.17" diameter). |

I have a commercial tube on a RRA and run a Magpul CTR stock. There are stocks availiable for you if you do want to swap. Hanging around here will have you thinking you have a POS rifle. Look at your uses and then decide if you need to swap parts. Spare BCG's are the biggest waste of money I've ever seen. How often do they break? You can get a replacement at any time, they aren't running out anythime soon. The LPK in your rifle works? Why replace it? If you want a better trigger on the cheap, get a Bill Spribgfield trigger job. Mine was $35 and couldn't be happier. Before running out and blowing a pile of money cause someone here says you need this and that, evaluate your needs first. And as far as your questions go:
Lowers take both It's a non-issue |

I personally would go with a mil-spec tube .... the important difference isn't really the tube itself but the way the threads are created between the two .... mil-spec threads are rolled in and commercial threads are cut into the tube. Crude diagram but it gets the point across....the weak spot on commercials is where the threads end. http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss19/gatorhunt2201/AR15%20stuff/milspecthread-1.png?t=1306519648 As far as extra parts I carry them when I travel long distances to a range and running home to grab some parts to fix something isn't an option. I have a complete spare parts bin which probably consists of enough spare small parts to rebuild 2 rifles I also take with me a spare BCG and CH. Nice pics, but it makes me dizzy looking at it.
