Does the standard front sight base have to be pinned on????? can it be attached any other way?????

AFAIK Yes it has to be pinned. There are standard looking FSBs that use set screws.

Armalite makes a standard looking FSB that clamps on to the barrel without through pins.

Armalite and a few others have clamps, but pinned is more secure.
