If you're just going for looks and you're not using it for military or LEO purposes, and its just a plinker, then go for it and get a fake can.  Personally, I don't see the point in investing over a grand on a suppressor plus the hassle to get a stamp to legally own it, if you're just using your rifle as a plinker or just for fun.  The 40-80 db that the real can will reduce in sound isn't worth it for me to shell out that kind of cash.

I like the fake can...I'm building a 10.5 with a spike's fake can I think it's like a modern CAR Commando....And if you don't want a sbr or a real can(or the taxes) It's an awesome alternative...Haters gonna hate
Here's my build

LIke the look if it was real, but not going to pay the outrageous fees.  Would have to say it is lame other than looks, but I wouldn't care of others opinion.  Would get one, but likely the last part of the build process.

The oooonly time I'd ever consider would be for a Mk18 clone where there is 16 inches of barrel underneath.

Otherwise, not a fan.

I have three real ones but still have a few fake ones.

(Mostly on guns like the GSG-5 –– not worth SBRing (not to me, anyway), but just doesn't look right with the skinny 16" bbl exposed.)

YMMV, as always.

I have a real .223 can that I run sometimes on my 11.5" SBR AR and also a 9mm can that I run on an 8" upper but I also have three fakes.

One is on a 5.75" .22 upper that I use to get it past the end of a carbine free-float rail until I get a .22 can
One is on my GSG carbine but it has the SD conversion kit on it right now until I SBR it
One is laying around but had been on a 16" carbine with a 12" rail and threaded back into the handguard to give the "SD" look

I am probably going to build a Mk18 Mod0 build but do not want to SBR another AR so I may go with a 16" and the slipover fake can on it.

I don't see any big problem with them. To each their own and all that and it's not like you are fooling anybody with one it's just cosmetics and how many of us buy crap just for cosmetics. Colored furniture, rails with nothing on them, lights we never use, etc. If you want the look I would say go with a 16" and put the slip-over can on it, if you SBR it later you will have plenty of time while you wait to get the barrel cut, crowned and threaded.

As for the price of cans...you can find deals on them. I picked up my YHM .223 threaded stainless new from a guy for $400. He had ordered it for somebody who backed out so $400 for can + $200 tax stamp + $50 to my receiving dealer = $650. My Gemtech multimount was $570 + $0 (Thanks Gemtech and Gemtax) so I am into it a little over $1200 for two cans, not bad.

I put one on a 22LR dedicated build and it looks good, and it keeps it short, I get crap for it every now and then at the range, but it is a dedicated 22 and I see no reason to suppress it at this point. I will save my money and suppress something else, and the fake supressor was about as much as the FH I was going to buy.

Who cares what anyone else thinks about what you want to do with YOUR gun? If having one will make you happy then go ahead & obtain one if that's what YOU want to do.

It's your rifle, have fun with it.  If that means screwing on a fake can, make it so.  You can always take it off.

I say lame but that's just like, my opinion man.

I think you'd be better served becoming a paying member.   That way, you could search Fake and find answers like this

since you live in PA and we are an NFA friendly state, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever for you to own a fake can...

Hellbound,
Reread his post.  He doesn't want a can.  He wants to spend money for the appearance that he has a can

Or something like that

well if he likes the look of a fake can, a real can looks great and works even better, it's like killing two birds with one stone...

Do whatever you want and forget the haters.  That being said, I'm a hater.    I think it is one of the dumbest waste of weight things you could put on your gun.

this is a legit 16 inch barrel, with a fake muzzle device.
doesn't look 16 inch, does it?
yes, its for looks.
I don't have a problem with looks.
