I made the first step in building my first AR today. I order a stripped lower receiver from Palmetto State Armory. I'm going to order the Magpul lower build kit on Monday, or should I wait until I order my upper? I'm so excited, I can't wait to get everything and go shoot. I'm gonna go crazy waiting, lol. Are there any tools that I will need to assemble the lower receiver?

I was looking at Palmetto State's Carbine upper for $400, but they're sold out right now. I looked at Delton too, but I was looking at their rifle kits. I'm not sure if I want to go with a rifle kit, or get a complete upper and the MOE lower build kit for $125 from PSA. Any input on which way ya'll think I should go?

I'd go with PSA over Del-Ton.

I put the PSA lower build kit in my Spikes Stripped lower last week and everything went together smoothly. The lbk is great quality for the price. I would go with it.

I have done both.  DTI and PSA LPK on Surplus Lower.  I must say that I really can't tell much of a difference.  I do think the Delton trigger is a bit better (smoother and little takeup) than the PSA I just installed.  It may be that it has been broken in, but the PSA had a lot of takeup.  220/221 to me - not much difference.  I bet you can get different quality parts each time you buy a kit. They are making these things as fast as they can.

I so like the $125 MOE LPK you were looking at.  I just installed that yesterday with the Dark Earth.  Really happy, but not so much with the MOE grips.  Hogue is much better with the finger grooves and more rubber feel.  MOE is just hard plastic, but time will tell if it grows on me.  If you want a color grip that matches the MOE, then MOE grip.  The kit went together smoothly, and I would do it again.  The best thing is if you are going to put a free float tube on the AR, this kit allows without having to buy all the pieces and parts.  I guess that is what a shop is for...Storing the extra parts.

Good luck to you.

I've got my eye on the Spikes Tactical middy from AIM for $500 and also the PSA uppers. I would prefer a mid-length, so whomever gets theirs in first will get my money. I can only speculate on what the price of PSA's middy upper will be, but quality and price should be about the same. I'd like to keep the upper and lower from the same place but in the end it doesn't really matter. The kits from del-ton and jsesurplus would take 4-8 weeks from the time I order to ship, so I'd rather go with a complete upper and get it a lil faster.
