Hi all. I'm putting together my 1st AR, nothing too special. It's gonna be a budget range gun primarily. I just completed the lower half. I started with a S&W lower and despite all the bad press I went with an R-Guns SS LPK that I got dirt cheap. Suprisingly everything fit perfectly and functions well. The trigger obviously leaves alot to be desired, but it works for now.  So, yeah, I'm left handed and have decided to go with a Stag Arms A3 Flattop upper reciever and BCG. What I havent decided yet is what barrel to go with. The big question is will a std barrel extension work with the lefty BCG? Or do I need to get the Ambidextrous Barrel Extension and go throught ordeal of trying to get everything to line up, or am I better off just ordering a complete lefty upper half from Stag?
Here my project so far.

You better change that stock unless its fixed in that position! A collapsible  stock on a postban AR is illegal in CT.

I am a lefty and also have a lefty Stag upper. I heard, like you, that you DO need an ambidextrous barrel extension to work with left handed components. Cost wise you'd probably be better off just ordering a completed Stag Upper. Stag is great quality by the way, you'll love it.

If you already have a vice, receiver block and barrel wrench, then adding your own barrel might be the best way to get it the way you want it.

If you don't, and you do not plan on building more, just get the stag upper and save the tool $$.

I bought the tools intending to build only one, and I've pieced together 4 (and disassembled a fifth for duracoating), so the tools might be a good investment either way.

Stag says the ambidextrous chamfers on the lugs in their barrel extension are necessary for the lefty BCG.  I have a lefty bcg/upper with a bravo barrel and extension (not ambidextrous), and have not noted any unusual wear or feeding/extraction problems.  Most people say it is fine to use a standard barrel extension.

Not to give you advice counter to your plan, but I have one lefty build because I shoot left handed.  The rest are all righty builds and the shell ejection doesn't bother me at all.  A standard AR is already pretty well set up for ambidextrous use (and the useful modifications for lefty use are to the lower....  ambi mag release and safety).

Good luck with your build.

Most cost-effective route will be buying a complete Stag upper. I have one and they are good to go.  If you contact various barrel companies and tell them you'd like an ambidextrous extension, they will most likely be able to do that for you.  John at White Oak Armament put a Stag ambi barrel extension on my SPR barrel.

Thanks for the info guys. As for the stock it was not pinned yet in that pic, but since has been pinned. I guess I'll have to make a couple of choices now.

I was gonna ask...how many lefties shoot righty guns..i shoot left handed and just decided to go ahead with the righty build with ambi mag release and ambi safety lever...i figure if everything is put together correctly it should not make much difference. Only thing i can really figure bothering me would be the charging handle since then latch is on the left side...even then woildnt matter unless in a SHTF scenario and then you would simply have to adapt using your right hand for the charging handle

I use to shoot righthanded guns but now there are lefthanded rifles its a no brainer and there is no problem with the charging handle.

The ambi barrel extension comes up every month or so around here. You can use a standard on a lefty upper.

You can get lefty upper/parts from Rainer also.
