Hey everyone. So i'm new to the forum and am hoping to build an AR-15 in the near future. Only problem is that i'm a little tight on cash, so i'm hoping to build a relatively inexpensive one that is still of good quality and accuracy. I found some other forum threads through google from 2006 where people were building entry level AR's for around $500 or $600 for a complete rifle. I know prices have gone up but if I could get one close to this that'd be great. I live in CA, so i'll also have a more restricted list of what manufacturers i'm allowed to buy from. I was wondering what would be the most inexpensive way to go about doing this, either:

buying a kit and then the lower

buying a fully assembled upper and lower and putting them together

buying everything disassembled and building it all

Whichever is less expensive, what are some good brands that offer some decent quality stuff for an entry level AR-15 at good prices. I'm not looking for a 600yd tack driver or anything, but i still want something that will be accurate to about 200 yds.

I've heard some stuff about Model 1, both good and bad. Some say that they make great stuff at low prices, but some also say that they have horrible customer service and sell some faulty stuff. I was also looking into some Rock River Arms kits and uppers. heard great things about them. I was also looking at Stag, which seems to also be another reputable brand.

So just to reiterate, which method would be the cheapest, and what manufacturer sells cheaper but still decent quality AR stuff that's CA legal?

Thanks a lot guys and I look forward to getting to use this forum more.

I can't answer on prices but personally I went with buying a stripped lower and a kit with a complete assembled upper.  You won't have to worry about headspacing, torquing the barrel extension or the barrel nut etc.  All you would do is assemble the lower parts kit and attach the upper and you're good to go.

You ought to be just fine with Spikes, they have a good rep around here.

welcome. another cali guy here. i spent way too much the first build i did. live and learn. last build i found some guys from woodland at the local gun show selling spikes lowers for 99 dollars. with tax and paperwork fees it was 150 bucks or so. found a lower parts kit for 56 bucks on line and the stock was a model one from midway usa for 55 bucks.my friend gave me a bullet button for free so that helped but those are usually 20 to 25 bucks.gotta have one in cali !with shipping, everything was under 300 bucks when done so not too bad. i've seen complete uppers for 399.95 on midways site from time to time. they are dpms, and have all the cheapest parts they can throw together. will it work? yes. you asked for cheap, so.....your best money would be spent at bravo company or aim surplus. AIM  have complete spikes uppers for great prices but they sell out fast.same with bravo company, they sell thier uppers out fast too. look at the top of the ar15.com page and click on the link to aim. uppers are not subject to the same rules as lowers so they can be shipped to you in cali. i've ordered from both and have had no issues to speak of. it would be imposible to build an upper as high quality as the spikes that aim is selling for the same money.good luck and have fun shooting whatever you get.

you can do a delton for 450, add a lower for 65 from nodakspud and with shipping it will be about 550. not a colt, but mine goes bang, and bangbangbangbang every time.

every gunshop i've gone too in my area tacks on $100 dollars per thousand on anything sent to them for ffl sales. 65 turns into 165 in my neck of the woods.thats why i jumped on a spikes lower for 99 bucks. most dealers around here sell owers for 150 to 200 dollars. and thats before the fees and taxes.
