Hello,  I am wanting to build a 300 whisper/fireball/blackout whatever upper. I need a very accurate barrel, flat top receiver, and a simple free float tube. I can use the 223 bolt and charge handle that I already have. Any other small parts that I need? Barrel nut,...........? I want to build this as inexpensively as possible without buying junk. I would appreciate any advice on where to purchase these items.

Does it really matter what upper receiver I use? I want to keep this as inexpensive as possible while still building a fully functional upper. (I don't want cheap junk) What brand do you guys suggest? And where is the best place to buy them?

thank you kindly,
swampie

Check out the 300 Whisper Forum

There is a guy there "tp555" that makes custom 2 and 3 position gas blocks, and barrels.  Seems to have a good reputation.  I have a 3 position block from tp555, in the "pistol" position - off, low, and high.  Off = single shot mode, low = small port for supersonics, and high = wide open 0.118" port for subsonics.  Kind of wishing I would have went with a 2 position, because since I got the suppressor, I don't see myself shooting much in the way of supersonic loads out of it.

I had a gunsmith friend of mine build my upper.  I bought all the parts, including a 1:8 Mcgowan barrel blank, and sent the parts to him to have the machine work done for me.  YHM rifle length handguard, YHM 7.62 Stainless Phantom QD Suppressor.

Noveske makes top notch stuff, but you'll pay for it.  Buy once, cry once.  Quality is priceless...at least that's what my Snap-on tools rep keeps telling me.

To get them running well, you'll probably need to locate the gas block under the handguards, but some people are running them successfully in the Carbine position also.

AA1680 Powder....get some.  Seems to be the trick to get them to cycle subsonics, was for me anyway.

Obligatory pics...

There is a 300 upper that's been for sale for awhile on Gunbroker. Maybe it still is. Seems righteous.

That's all fine and dandy but I need brands of quality upper receivers that won't break the bank. I plan to build this one piece at a time. I think I've decided on a barrel and gas block and free float tube. Now I just need an upper receiver and a few small parts.

thanks,

Upper - Bravo Company - $99
Barrel - Noveske (you won't find more accurate) - $350-$400 depending on length
Rail - Take your pick, but I like Larue $ is up to you
Bolt Carrier Group - Bravo Company is all I use $139
