I just finished my build and noticed that the ejection port cover stays open. is this a normal thing? Does it close only when it rounds are loaded?

Define "stays open"...

If you are referring to the little flip down door that covers the ejection port, then it closes only when you close it.  it stays closed until the BCG moves, either manually or due to being fired.

Then it patiently waits till you close it again.

I never understood why people buy guns (or other things) they know really nothing about.

We all had to start at some point. I commend the OP for asking the question....carry on....<><....:)

That may be true but OP said he built it himself. You'd think he would have basic knowledge on how it works/functions. That kind of lack of basic knowledge can get people injured or killed.

You have to learn somewhere and people at funshows tend to be uninfomative at best.

These forums exist to ask questions on.  At least he asked and hopefully got the answer he needed.

Remember the only stupid question is the question not asked.....

To the OP you need to find someone in your area that is familiar with AR's and get a hands on lesson, for your own safety.  Also if you built this have it checked out before fireing.  Check the hometown forum for your state.

I understand your thoughts, but to his credit, he asked the question, and is trying to learn, and thats good.  Also, we really don't know what he meant by "finished my build". I have seen many posts here where aomeone has put an upper on a lower and referred to it as a "build". I would rather have someone not know something and ask to find out than to have them not know and continue to march, oblivious to the answer....<><....:)

i had the lower reciever assembled by a gun smith. "finished my build" means that i put together the finished lower and upper reciever. I was just trying to ask a simple question to learn. The ejection port cover is what i was refering to. I tried closing it but it springs open.

This +1 Also, go buy a USMC/ARMY M16A2/M4A1 (or similar to it) manuel from a army surplus store and read it cover to cover. (for the fun of it and the information)

It does have the little spring-loaded plunger there in the middle, correct?

It will only stay closed if the bolt carrier is locked back or all the way closed.

That door message reminds me of a Eastwood line:  "Call Dee Ambrosia - ask him if coffee is psychic."

That's from the Epic Beard Guy videos.  It's worth looking up to watch.
