I've already completed a few builds using 2"x4"'s and a bench vise to hold the upper receiver in place during assembly and barrel torquing, but I'm thinking life would be easier if I just broke down and purchased a receiver block. I'm afraid that eventually, I'm going to crack a receiver with the wood "giving" a little bit. So, I've done some checking and I've narrowed it down to two. Which of the two would ARFcom recommend? What are the pros and cons of each? Are there others that would be better?

If it must be between those two(I like Brownells block), the mod 1 100%. I have one of the DPMS "panther claw" blocks (and a knock off just like it) and I only use it to hold a complete upper for mounting accessories, like say a scope.
I prefer a armorers block that clamps around and supports the whole upper receiver. And even though the "panther claws" are greatly improved over the other similar type blocks. I've seen some sad stuff happen using those type blocks to torque barrel nuts. I'm sure if your careful you would be fine with the DPMS. But if you are going to be building a lot of uppers, I personally would just go with the Mod 1. (or the brownells, hint hint The DPMS also works well for cleaning, if you cut the top of the block off. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=22385/Product/AR_15_M16_UPPER_RECEIVER_ACTION_BLOCK |
| Bushmaster sells a really nice vise block. It wraps around the whole upper receiver instead of attaching via two pins through the pivot and takedown pin lugs. It holds carry handle as well as flat top receivers. Of the two you linked, the Model 1 would be better. It clamps the whole receiver like the Bushmaster vise block. |

I've got a clam shell, but recently picked up the PRI that is similar to the DPMS you posted. I like that the PRI can be used to line up rails to the upper. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=878754 |
| The DPMS will work for 95% of barreling and removal. But if you get a stubborn one, that requires too much torque, you will experience upper flexing and could crack the receiver. Clamshell designs and the Blockworx type are the best for extremely tight barrel nuts. |

Im in the market to but wondering if the Clamshell type work with some of the billet uppers? Might work with the LaRue, that's about it. I'd recommend the Block Worx for the billet uppers. like he said... maybe larue.. the brownells worked for my Bushmaster but its a no-go for my VLTOR MUR. I'm ordering the Block Worx. |
