I am starting on my first build and want have a pretty basic bug out gun. I picked up an upper for pretty cheap and when looking for barrels have herd alot of talk about headspacing and not headspacing. Is it necissary or not? I will be using a different upper, different barrel and different bolt so I feel like something is at least necissary. I'm a Marine and have had a miniscule amount of experience with the armory so I don't know that much but I'm also not jumping in with no idea.
I've already got one AR and toy around with my M16 as much as I can so this is just a play thing not my dedicated weapon of choice. Just trying to get my feet wet. |

Headspacing the bolt to the barrel is the correct way of building your AR... I have some GO / NO GO gauges that I use for USED barrels or bolts. A NEW barrel and a NEW bolt should not have any headspace issues. I've put some together without checking headspace. I would imagine that most of the people who build AR's at home do not use any sort of gauges... Will you be ok without them? 99% yes. Could there be the 1 in a 1,000,000 chance that your gun blows up? Sure. Good luck on the build. |

For what it is worth, I started my first build within the past couple weeks and to a point where I need to start constructing an Upper. Good luck, wish I had some advice but I am noobing it. Coming from this former Marine, enjoy and good luck. S/F post in your hometown forum. There will likely be someone willing to help. |
