I am starting on my first build and want have a pretty basic bug out gun. I picked up an upper for pretty cheap and when looking for barrels have herd alot of talk about headspacing and not headspacing. Is it necissary or not? I will be using a different upper, different barrel and different bolt so I feel like something is at least necissary. I'm a Marine and have had a miniscule amount of experience with the armory so I don't know that much but I'm also not jumping in with no idea.
I've already got one AR and toy around with my M16 as much as I can so this is just a play thing not my dedicated weapon of choice. Just trying to get my feet wet.

Headspacing the bolt to the barrel is the correct way of building your AR... I have some GO /  NO GO gauges that I use for USED barrels or bolts.

A NEW barrel and a NEW bolt should not have any headspace issues. I've put some together without checking headspace. I would imagine that most of the people who build AR's at home do not use any sort of gauges...

Will you be ok without them? 99% yes.
Could there be the 1 in a 1,000,000 chance that your gun blows up? Sure.

Good luck on the build.

For what it is worth, I started my first build within the past couple weeks and to a point where I need to start constructing an Upper.  Good luck, wish I had some advice but I am noobing it.  Coming from this former Marine, enjoy and good luck.

headspace yes
wrap some electrical tape around your lower when installing the pin in the bolt catch so you dont scratch the lower.
use a piece of wood as backup when installing the trigger guard so you dont break the lower ear off.
