I Just wanted to say thanks to the members here for contributing the wealth of information. I started my build today with a stripped Aero Precision lower and Rock River Arms LPK. The assembly wasn't terrible but there is no way I could have done it without all the information and how-to guides from this site.

I'm pretty certain I want a Magpul MOE stock but I'm not sure of the difference between mil-spec and civilian spec tubes. I'm also still in research mode on the upper especially on the barrel length, I'm between 14.5" and 16". Anyway thanks again for all the info here! |

Nice start.
You want milspec size extension... stronger, better quality control on the actual size, more stock options... there is no reason whatsoever to get commmercial sized extensions. Just make sure you buy a milspec sized stock too. I personally LOVE my 14.5 middy. you just have to make sure you settle your rail setup with the perm attached FH. |

Awesome! I second the recommendation on the mil-spec extension. I usually get my from Bravo Company...

Thanks guys. I just found this perusing the FAQ's so it looks like Mil-Spec is the way to go. Now onto the daunting task of deciding which upper to go with!
What is the difference between the Mil-Spec and the Commercial Receiver Extensions ('buffer tube')? Who uses what? The commercial tubes are slightly larger in diameter where the stock slides, but slightly smaller in diameter when it screws into the receiver. Either can be installed on standard lowers, with the Mil-Spec one actually having the stronger interface (more surface area of the threads engage the receiver). Mil-Spec ( 1.148" outer diameter): Colt, LMT, CMT (Stag, S&W, CMMG), VLTOR Commercial (1.168" outer diameter): Everyone Else (Bushmaster, RRA, DPMS, Olympic, etc.) Another way to tell is a commercial tube is the same outside diameter as the points on the threads. A milspec size tube is smaller in diameter than the points on the threads so you can see where the threads taper down in size. |

Looks sharp, don't have much to add, but I just finished my first build a couple days ago, and I have the exact picture of the lpk laid out in the same exact manner as the pic in the tutorial. |

So I went back to New Frontier this weekend to continue the build. Picked up a Magpul MOE Stock, a Magpul MIAD Grip, a Spike's buffer assembly kit, and a Magpul 30 round magazine.

So everything came off and I assembled it correctly the 2nd time. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/gnostic203/AR%20Build/17_Grip_Stock.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/gnostic203/AR%20Build/18_Lower_Done.jpg Now I truly only require an upper and I'm done with my first AR build. I really can't wait to go shoot this thing. |
