So I ordered my first AR the other day. The complete rifle kit someone posted from coldhand arms. My question is what are the absolute necessary tools needed for building and then maintaining an AR? I have friends that are telling me In need a barrel torque wrench even though the upper is complete already. I don't think I really do need one for this build. Maybe for future builds, but not this one. This one I just have to build the lower and attach the butt stock.
So what tools are necessary for building and maintaining an AR rifle. Thanks |

if the upper is assembled(asuming it was done right) you spared your self, a torque wrench, upper holder and barrel nut wrench and a big vice or press to hold it. but you may want to get a dpms multi tool anyhow. go to the tacked threads above for lower assembly, read it well, because other wise you will break the ears of the lower trigger guard,if you dont know what your doing. check them out. the tools needed will be well explained, for your lower assembly.
IMO, a 22 cal outers rifle cleaning kit, alluminum rod,no stainless brushes, some bore patches, hoppes bore solvent and mobil one oil works like a charm, for maintenance.practice taking bcg apart,so it will be easy to reassemble in the field if need be. you could stock up on replacement parts too, depending how much shooting you do.you may never need to do any repairs, ever. if you maintain the weapon |

Get an action block for upper. Very useful item. Lower mag block is nice too - but you can make your own. Just use old mag, I filled one with 'really good stuff' - works fine. Multi-tool is pretty much a must if you need to remove a barrel. Most have the stock wrench on opposite end, so may as well get it now. Pick up a set of small pin punches / picks - these are handy. Small (8oz is plenty) brass / no-mar mallet - you'll want this too. Be careful when installing the trigger guard, take your time and keep lower well supported when installing pin - you can FU your new lower here. Same with the mag catch pin, tape it all up and take your time. There is a thread somewhere - if you have the tools / skill, make rear dent spring captive. Tap hole and install set-screw - save you from waiting a week for a new rear-detent spring sometime because yours flew 'somewhere'. Same for safety detent if you choose - not as important as rear takedown IMO. Pay close attention to the hammer spring, it is possible to install it incorrectly (remember under hammer pin then over trigger pin). As for cleaning - use what works for you. And Always oil / grease parts before installing. Have fun, read the 'how-to' threads and ask questions if needed - quality over speed. |
