I have a FF handguard with bipod/sling studs.  Need those to be facing straight down when torqued.  Does someone make shims that fit between upper front face and handquard to aid in indexing the handguard?  Looked Brownells, here, etc but can't find the right thing.

Thanks,

That is a tough one.  Was the sling swivel hole added by someone else and you bought it used?  If so, they probably added it after it was installed.  Sometimes that is a one time use application.

If it's only off a little, like at 7 o'clock and needs to get to 6 o'clock (looking from the rear) you might get away with lapping the upper a little.

what type of rail BRAND is it?

It's no rail. Just a smooth round ff handguard.  Has some shallow flutes running lengthwise.  And yes, I did buy it used, but I thought I had it mounted before on this upper and then changed to original plastics just for fun.  It's been a few years but seems like I remember a shim or washer or something. Maybe I need to dig through the random parts bin more carefully.

BTW, it starts to get tight with the studs at about 11 o clock.  No way it's going to make it all the way around back to 6.  I need a washer/shim that will start to get tight around 3 or 4?

"missing a piece" - that's what I'm thinking.  Where's an exploded diagram online?

I'll put up some pics tomorrow.

BTW I don't know what brand.  That info is lost in the mists of time.

well that's the problem, without a brand or pictures, we're just sort of guessing here

can you describe the mounting system?
barrel nut?
etc

Just an update to report that as inspector Clouseau would say, "The case is solv-ed"

Missing piece was a 79 cent o-ring that fits into the barrel nut area of the hand guard.  It's only 1/16 thick but that made it line up just perfectly when torqued.  I had thought I remembered that so I took the handguard to the hardware store and found one that fit right in there.
