Using a torge wrench I tightened the barrel nut to 35ftlbs, but the tooth was right in front of the gas tube whole.  My options were to crank it down hard or back it off, so I backed it off.  but now its just at the point where If I turn the hand gard the entire assembly at the nut will turn.  The only thing keeping it on is the gas tube.    Do I have any options here?  Other than buying a new tube.  I had this on a different reciever for a few years with no problems but this is bothering me.

Thanks in advance.

35 is minimum.  Crank it to the next hole and you will be good to go.  I had to go a lot more than 35 ft-lbs to get mine lined up so it was not any different than any other barrel nut I've ever put on.

Are you using the spanner properly?  It should be at a 90 degree angle from the torque wrench while measuring.  More than likely you will make it to the next hole without going over max.

I had the same problem with my F/F tube install. Just like the other guys said, go to the next hole while the upper is in a vise block and using a torque wrench, you should be fine. Take your time though and lube the nut with the proper grease.
