I have a new barrel on my first build, and my question is should there be groves in the barrel where the pins go for the fsb? Mine don't have any and it seems like the pins are gouging into the barrel. Do I just keep pounding them home?

The barrel should have been drillled to accept a front sight base.
You may have bought a barrel not drilled.

Barrel and FSB are match drilled and tapper reamed as one unit, then the pis are installed. Do not pound the pins in if you can see steel in the holes.

So is this something that I can drill or do I have to take to a gunsmith? And thank you for your replies.

there is a jig you can buy but its best left to a qualified gun smith,

So, you're trying to hammer pins through a FSB on a barrel that has not been drilled??? WTH?

Take it to a qualified gunsmith (or send it to ADCO) and have them install the FSB for you.

Don't worry. Most everyone made mistakes when they were new to AR's. I know I did.

Thanks for the info. I followed the instructions on this site and everything went great till that part. I will take it some where. Yea I put on the fsb inserted the pins and whacked a couple of times and figured something just wasn't right.

You could simply purchase a FSB that is a bolt on rather than spend extra money on a Smith.... But if you decide on a Pinned FSB its cheeper to take to a simith rather than buy the exta tools you need,,, Unless you want to build another rifle then go for it...
