So I am building my first AR-15 and I have a buffer question.

I came across a website today (Larue Tac I believe) that compared a Commercial Buffer tube w/ a Mil Spec - and I noticed there was some size difference.  I have a Spikes Lower - will they both fit or do I need one or the other - the diameter is difference - although not a lot there is some difference.

Thanks

threading is the same, either will fit.  The diameter of the tube is slightly different so what matters is matching the stock.  Mil spec buffer tube needs mil spec stock, commercial tube needs commercial stock.  Mil spec is slightly smaller in diameter than commercial.  I believe other than that the only other difference is that the mil spec tube is made of a stronger grade metal, not sure though.

Guess that sorta confused me a tad

What bob said. Either will fit and work, but then you need to pay attention to what stock you're buying - whether it's mil-spec or commercial. When I did my first build I over looked that and bought a commercial for my mil-spec buffer. The stock was just loose around the buffer and wobbled.

IMO - I would use a Commercial Buffer Tube over the Mil-Spec. You have more options in stocks to choose from. But if your are going and make a complete Mil-Spec AR than go for it. But that your call. Good luck with your build. Pictures are required at completion.

I believe this statement to be a bit misleading unless you are considering the air soft products that are available. Any of the companies that are serious about AR's have a mil-spec offering.
