what is a good torque wrench to use when you want to tighten things up like mounts and other stuff on rifle builds? been playing it by ear, but i'd like to be more precise. all the searching on google only gets me bigger automotive ones, or wrenches that start with 10 or 20 foot pounds and in 5 pound increments only.
there has to be a solid answer to this. thanks. |

If you are talking about ring screws and mount bolts, you're talking in-lbs and that would be the Wheeler Fat Wrench. It's ok but if you really want to be exact then you spend lots of money and get yourself Seekonk dedicated T Torque wrenches. But really, a Fat Wrench is probably all you need.
I mostly use a Fat Wrench but I have Utica TS100, I use from time to time. |
| thanks but doesnt the fat wrench start at 10 in lbs and go up to 40 in 5 pound increments? is it easy to change the in lb point? is there a general rule for ring mounts for scopes, lights, etc.? i didnt find that info in the torque sticky. if there is i guess you can only do it in 10 15 or 20 in lbs. i cannot imagine going more. |

It's marked in five inch pound increments, but you can adjust it to various settings in between the increments. You have to eyeball in between the marks - for example set the indicator mark half way between the 20 and 25 setting to achieve 22.5. It goes up to 65.
ETA: It is adjusted by pulling on the end cap and turning it (or tightening it) to set the indicator it where you want. Pretty simple. I agree with the above, it's inexpensive and is adequate for my purposes of tightening scope mounts, etc to a consistent setting. |

"Tight" is the only torque setting I see for most stuff. Badger Ordnance rings are 30inlbs on the screws and 60inlbs on the nuts. Flashlight mounts, that would be "tight". A general rule for allen wrenches are as tight as you can make them by grabbing the small end. Doesn't give you much leverage.
As for say the Eotech screw, once again that's "tight". But I wouldn't exceed 60inlbs. The FAT wrench is 10 to 65 inlbs in 5 inlbs increments. The FAT wrench comes with torque suggestions for base screws, ring screws and trigger guard screws. Since torque has a relationship to thread pitch and diameter, one could correlate based on what your tightening. Gas key screws are 35-40inlbs. |
