How long does a flash hider need to be to bring a 14.5 to 16, I know there is an inch and a half difference but how much extra for the threads? Also any link with a decent deal on a FH would be apperciated. Thanks

You need an A2X (X = Extended) permed to a 14.5 to get it up to a skosh over 16.

See BCM.

I estimate about 2.1 inches or longer. To be more specific, my YHM Phantom 5C1 measures 2-1/4 (2.25) inches from where it contacts the crush ring to the end of the device. It's been permanently pinned/welded to the barrel. It brings a LMT 14.5 inch barrel to at least 16.25 inches when measured by ATF procedure (inserting a dowel rod down the barrel to the bolt face, with the bolt closed on an empty chamber, etc).

Here's a link to several which would work: BCM - Barrel Parts

There are also a few others listed there such as the Surefires...

YHM Phantoms are probably the lowest price and do a good job. Blackout, and Smith Vortex are also long enough, and many think are better flash suppressors than Phantoms. Some say Smith Vortex are the best for both flash suppression, and that it MAY increase accuracy in some rifles. I'll leave that to you to read more about.

Some also recommend considering a suppressor which would be compatible with a sound suppressor (can) if there is any chance that one might ever be used on the rifle. Smith makes a Vortex model which is compatible with a can. Also look at the Vltor VC-1 if interested in this.

ADCO, a site sponsor, is a great place to send your barrel in for permanent pinning of the muzzle device if you don't have a local gunsmith or aren't doing it yourself. They did the pinning on mine, and have many satisfied Arfcommers as customers. They also sell many of the flash suppressors.

I used a PWS SM556. Probably 1/16" over 16". Maybe a little less.

Sabre Defense and BCM each offer an extended A2 flash hider specifically designed to make your 14.5 barrel legal when pinned and welded.

I like the BCM offering because it comes with a pin and crush washer and the flash hider is predrilled.

Of course, if you don't require the A2 stock look, there are a multitude of options from YHM phantom types to various compensators and flash suppressors like the Smith Vortex and the FSC556.
