After buying a ar-15 for the first time i dont see why i own anything else? They dont kick they are accurate and they are dependable.
Well i want to build a varmint ar15 for target shooting along with hunting. I have never build a ar15 before but after looking over this http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782 it seem to be a breeze even for mechanical dummy's like me. I only own 1 ar-15 right now its a dpms carbine length i bought a gun show got a pretty good deal on it. I dont know what caliber i want to build the rifle in. I want to be able to use this rifle to shoot deer and varmints along with target shoot. I reload all of my own ammo to save money so reloading supplies would have to be available and cheap. Some calibers i am considering, 6.5 grendal 6.8 spc .458 SOCOM I know there is alot of calibers available i just don't know which one to choose. I might just stick with the 5.56x45 already have alot of ammo loaded just looking at other options. 2nd question where is the best place to buy cheap parts? 3rd question how cheap is it to build a ar-15 rather then buying one. Assuming both used the exact same parts. |
I would stay away from 6.5 grendel due to the lack of availability of parts/ammo unless you really need that efficient of a cartridge. 6.8 spc seems like a hunting round with good power, and also uses a standard 5.56 lower so all you'd need is another upper along with mags to convert your DPMS to a 6.8 hunting machine.
as for the best place to buy cheap parts, you'll have to decide what parts you want then look at places that carry those specific parts. as you'll hear 100 times on here, BCM, spikes, etc. have good deals. i've purchased from Rainier Arms, and on some products they have very good prices. the best prices i've seen are at Primary Arms, but they don't carry much in terms of "gun parts" but more accessories. that leads to the next question, and i'd say that if you can find a complete upper that has EVERYTHING that you want exactly, it would probably be cheaper to just buy that. i think the reason people build ar15's is so that they can get exactly what they want and how they want it, and just for the fact that building something and shooting it after is kinda fun... that's why i built mine, as opposed to buying, because i knew what i wanted and nobody sold it exactly. |

Me, I would go 6.8 in 16, maybe 18.
If you do go 6.8 check the 68Forums and AR Performance. Remember, there's cheap then there's good...if you meant value, then BCM is a good place to start. |
