I'm thinking of taking a crack at building up a rifle and was wondering if i took a 10.5 barrel and permanently attached one of the 5.5 flash hiders to come out to exactly 16 inches would I be in the clear legally?

Yes
ETA- Sorry I didn't take the overlapping threads into account.

You'll have to use an 11.5" barrel. If you account for the overlap of the threads a 10.5" barrel + 5.5" flashider won't get you to 16".

Or you could use this flash hider permanently installed on a 14.5"*. That way you get the look of the shorter barrel but the function of the longer barrel.

*might require slightly longer than a 14.5" to meet the 16" length.

if you want to start out with easy.
bushmaster sells 11.5 inch barrels and 14.5 inch barrels with the correct size flash hider already installed and welded for legality. no guesswork necessary

You could, but WHY?  You'll only rob yourself of accuracy and velocity.

14.5 with a PA.

Just curious. What is the advantage of a 10.5 or 14.5 barrel over the 16? I mean if you legally have to have a 16" barrel why trade barrel lenth for a longer flash hider?

Agreed. I have a 13.7" and 14.5" w/ perm. attached comp/FH respectively, but only b/c that's the size of those attachments. None of them were purpose built to be longer. The extended FH looks like hell and serves no purpose.

there isn't any real practical purpose no, but I was drawing up a few things and it just appealed to me. I might go the 11.5 route. It not really meant to be tactical or what ever its just meant to be me and mine.
