Currently have an A2 stock on my 16" Cmmg carbine AR. Would appreciate feedback on the Magpul stock range, quite like the ctr and acs range. Do you think the Ubr and Prs models would be overkill? Pros and cons? Thanks. |

Most of us here, including myself tries to just balance the weight of the stock with the weight of the front of the AR.
Like my 16" M4 style carbine with a short Knight's Armament M4 RAS rails I prefer a lighter stock like the Magpul CTR. With my heavier front carbine 16" midlength gas system, medium contour barrel, and 9" rails I like to use my heavier Vltor EMOD stock, if I have to choose a Magpul stock probably the ACS and the UBR would balance my front heavy carbine. Here's a great article about choosing stocks for the AR-15. http://www.03designgroup.com/technotes/ar15-buttstock-considerations |
| I have a CTR and a UBR. The CTR is a really nice simple stock. It locks up really tight and is lightweight. I really can't complain about this stock at all. I wouldn't reccomend putting it on a gun that is front end heavy since this stock is very light. On a light gun this is a great stock. The UBR is a tank. I bought it for my 458 socom to help balance that pig out. It is much more expensive but an amazing piece. It does a great job of balancing out a gun that is front heavy. Its a very interesting design unlinke anything else on the market. DSG ARMS has a sale on all green magpul stocks. Thats where i got the UBR. (no affiliation with them) |

Pros and cons? Thanks. Do you shoot nose to charging handle or with your head back a bit? If you shoot NTCH CTR might be uncomfortable on your cheek (not all are affected or bothered by this). I shoot NTCH and personally prefer ACS and UBR for their superior cheekweld and solid lockup. ACS is a very practical stock, but UBR is incredible if you don't mind the extra weight. In my opinion (only) PRS would be a bit much on a carbine. |

Thanks for the feedback and links gents. I don't shoot nose to charger. I think you are correct the PRS would be overkill for my application.
I did review the Sopmod and Emod, very nice indeed. The other question I have is can I used any parts from when I remove my current A2 stock assembly? What sort of buffer is currently recommended, I heard H2 is ok, I am guessing this means medium to firm. Thanks again. |

What sort of buffer is currently recommended, I heard H2 is ok, I am guessing this means medium to firm. Thanks again. You cannot use any parts from your current A2 stock assembly, buy the mil-spec size carbine receiver extension (buffer tube) kit which includes a carbine size action spring, carbine buffer, carbine receiver end plate, and carbine castle nut. I would suggest specifically to get the mil-spec size buffer tube because there are more stock models that are compatible with it than the commercial size buffer tube. Mil-spec buffer tubes are available in 4, 5, or 6 position, for a more versatile use I would recommend the 6 position type. I'm currently using the factory Colt H buffer that came with my carbine but heavier H2, H3, and 9mm buffers could be used, just try it out with whatever ammo you're using to see that it will function, heavier buffers tend not function well with light loads. Here's a sample of a receiver extension kit. BCM Stock Hardware Mounting Kit (Mil-Spec) |
