Trying to decide between a Stag Arms M4 or a Lewis Machine & Tool M4. They both seem to be about the same money, so what's says the hive? |

OP, are you talking about a complete barreled upper? or the stripped upper receiver itself?
if you are talking about stripped uppers, CMT makes the uppers for Stag and Noveske, I thought RRA assembled and finished their own forgings which is why they laser engrave their logo on them... either way, CMT uppers have been nothing but trouble for me, I have about a half dozen CMT upper receivers, and all of them had tolerance stacking issues where they were so tight there was no way to physically insert the takedown pin... this is on Colt, LMT, and Stag lowers... after swapping them around, a few fit "okay" on some lowers, a couple i had to "fit", and others i just sold off... the LMT uppers i own fit with no issues on ALL of the lowers i own... currently the only uppers on my rifles are Colt, LMT, one Sabre Defence, and LT Stealth... If you are talking about barreled uppers... the LMT offers 1/7 twist with 4150 CMV over the Stag 1/9 twist 4140 barrel steel. LMT uses proper M4 feedramps with M4 cuts in the upper. the only complaint about LMT is they use straight pins in their FSB and they don't park under it... my 16" LMT upper is very accurate for a rack grade M4 which seems to be the general consensus... i read in another thread that the LMT catalog claims that they cryo all of their barrels which could account for their improved accuracy... I have had one Stag 2H upper and I sold it, the bolt lugs were so tight that they wouldn't lock into the barrel extension... even with the "supposed" F height FSB the thing wouldn't zero for shit... it kept running out of elevation... LMT bolt carrier groups are shot peened, proof fired (HPT) and MPI. they come with the correct carbine extractor spring and insert and even include a Crane O-Ring. the gas keys are properly staked. there was a huge fuss about LMT switching to MIM gas keys, but i have yet to see any reports of them breaking Stag (CMT) bolt carrier groups are who knows, MPI tested in batches and comes as an option, but not HPT, folks with more knowledge than me on the topic say that MPI without HPT is pointless. Last one I had came with rifle extractor spring and insert and was NOT properly staked. I had a 6.8SPC bolt from CMT (stag's parent company) that came "matched" from Noveske... it was a piece of shit... instead of a 6.8SPC extractor which has a deeper relief in it to grab the 6.8SPC case rim, it instead had a defective 5.56 extractor (one side was higher than the other) which chewed up cases and caused the bolt to fail to go into battery... i was told by noveske to take a dremel to it to smooth out the extractor claw... but that wouldn't fix the fact that it was still a 5.56 extractor (so much for paying extra for a matched bolt)... i have had other problems with Stag/CMT LPK and stocks... since then i've given up on the company... |

@ Hellbound, wow thanks for the ton of info. I was going for complete barreled uppers thanks. i am glad it helped... one word answers with no justification tend to frustrate me as a reader, so i'd rather flood with you all of my experiences and information to help you better decide... my 16" home defense AR is an LMT as is my 10.5" MK18 clone... i'd take the LMT over the Stag any day of the week, especially if they are the same price... the LMT 1/7 twist being able to reliably shoot 75/77gr ammo is enough reason for me... |
