I am building my first lower and was wondering if there is a trick to getting the pivot pin and takedown pins in? i have large fingers that are getting in the way.
And does anyone know where i can get the detents for these i have now lost both!?
Thanks

LOL yea, that pivot pin detent will launch if you're not careful.  You should be able to get a new one locally, wherever you are.  It's is the most commonly launched part.  Call any local gunshop, they should have one, and if they don't, shame on them.

I use a spare pivot pin and insert it from the right side of the receiver just enough to hold the detent in place while I insert the other pivot pin from the left.
EDIT: Brownells sells a tool specifically for this task, but you don't really need it.  It's an extra convenience, but a spare pivot pin works fine.

The takedown pin detent installation won't give you the same trouble.

For the pivot pin I use a 1/4" (or appropriately sized, don't remember if 1/4" is right right now) clevis pin. I push the clevis pin in from the left side of the receiver & rotate it till the hole lines up with the hole for the spring & detent. Then drop spring & detent in hole & push down with a paper clip (or something similar), twist the clevis pin so the spring & detent are captured. Next insert the pivot pin in & push the clevis pin out, the detent will fall right into place.

The take down pin should be no problem as it is never under pressure when being installed.

I had a gunsmith at a gun show me how to put a lower together once. He showed me an easy way to put the pivot pin detent in. Use the back side of the pivot pin to hold down the spring and detent then slide it in and flip it over and viola.
