I'm trying to install a Hogue Free Float Handguard (not the rubber overmold but the knurled one) to a DPMS carbine new build. I know the procedure is to tighten loosen tighten till you can get the gas tube hole to line up, but I can't get to the next hole. If I back it off the barrel is not tight enough, but i can not get the next hole. I can only get slightly past the partition between holes being about dead center of the gas tube hole in the reciever. Any help would be appreciated.     Thanks Scott

What are you using to tighten it?  Just your hand?

I recently installed one of these, and if I remember correctly, a standard armorer's wrench won't work.  I think I used a strap wrench and some cheater pipe.

I have the receiver in an amorers block in the vise, and using large channel locks padded with leather. I think that its a really nice looking handguard, well made. And you are right my handguard wrench would not fit it.           Scott

Do what I did.

Obtain a standard GI type barrel nut wrench and drive out the 3 original pins.  Buy some music wire from your local hobby shop or get 3 inexpensive drill bits that are the same diameter as the original pins.  Cut three of them to about 1.125" in length with a Dremel tool.  Deburr both ends of each pin and drive them back in place of the originals.  The wrench will now extend far enough into the Hogue barrel nut to allow you to use a breaker bar or torque wrench.  Don't exceed 80 lb-ft and you should be able to get gas tube alignment.  If not, let us know. There are other options to achieve alignment.

Go to Home Depot and buy yourself a Rigid brand strap wrench.  Done.

I looked for a strap wrench at Home Depot, Lowes, and Sears and could not find one? Thanks for the replies. Scott

i've used the sears strap wrench, broke when installing the first time luckily it was on a gas hole.  took the wrench back and got a new one (gotta love the lifetime warranty) when i needed to remove the handguard.  if you search their web site for strap wrench you can find them and see if your store has them or not.

This is the strap wrench set I own and use.  They work well for me.

I use a commercial version of the posted above.  That is what those 3 "studs" are for.

I got the Handguard installed, and it looks great. Picked up a strap wrench, and that was the ticket. It wasn't easy to index to the next hole, but the strap wrench made it possible. Thanks for the Help Guys.        Scott
