I'm set on building a Mk. 12 after ogling the thread for a long time now. Would I be totally insane for this to be the first AR I build? What common pitfalls/advice would you give me for tips on building the upper? Any anecdotes of mistakes made while building would be quite helpful

i built a mod 0 as my first build and it went smoothly. Just double check then triple check everything before assembly and you should be good to go. After I built this one I told myself I'm never going to do a clone again. The mod 0 cost me too much. I love it though and its a tack driver when I do my part.

Just make sure you have the $$$,  I considered building one but after adding up the actual cost I decided it was too much for another AR.

So you didn't have any issues? I see a lot of people with issues, from indexing the brake, getting the PRI front sight on there, and fixing the collar the right way and was wondering if you had any of those issues.

Money is not really an issue right now, since I have none! I'm just trying to do all my homework and really understand the weapon before I begin construction.

Do some searches, you have more capability than me.

I remember some threads with details on people's builds.

didnt have any problem indexing the brake. i noticed the collar would loosen up on me after a range session so i just put some red loctite on the threads of the set screw and cranked on it. hasnt loosened up yet. i didnt use the pri front site but i had the same issue as others who have. getting the site to be perfectly indexed will take you a couple tries to get it right.

I've already read all 76 pages of the Mk 12 Mod 0/1 thread twice and quite a few of the archives, so I am not looking for lists of people's "parts". I was really looking for installation tips and other head's ups to avoid making the same mistakes of others.

Can you expand on this?

its nothing to do with the gas port but the first couple times i tried to line up the front site i would have to crank the rear sight to one side to get on target because the front site was off by just the slightest degree. after a few more tries i got it right. using a boresighter would let you get it right the first time but i dont have one.

Due to the cost of a Mk12 Mod0 I spent about a year, at least, acquiring all the parts for the upper.  Once I had all the parts together I sent them all to ADCO for assembly.  That way I know I couldn't screw anything up.  Plus they had to mill the flats for the PRI sight/gas block and paint the barrel black.

Ah! Very helpful tip! Thanks, that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

How much did that milling cost?

How much did that milling cost?

$40.00 for milling and $40.00 for KG Koting.

You can go to ADCO's website and look under shop sevices section for services and pricing.

How durable is the KG Gunkote? I saw a comparison that said it ranked 3rd behind DC and Cerakote. Also, did you use the set screw or clamp on version of the PRI flip front site?

I haven't had any problems with the KG.  I'm not real hard on it either as it only goes from the safe to the range and back to the safe.  Plus their really isn't a lot of barrel exposed as most is covered by the PRI tube and the OPS Inc. collar.

I have a very early screw version of the sight.

Do you need anything extra with the PRI tube/does it come with a barrel nut, etc..? Does it use a special wrench other than the armorer's (a la Daniel Defense)?

It has the barrel nut but you need a PRI forearm wrench like this one below to make things easier.
