My current AR has a Diemaco C7 upper with a 16" barrel. My friend owns a company that has started making AR barrels, and I am testing an 11.5" barrel using my existing upper. I have ordered a Double Star .750 Picatinny gas block that mounts with set screws, and I ordered a new carbine gas tube and barrel nut/delta ring/spring/clip. I do not plan on using a free float forend; instead, I plan on reusing the 2 piece Carbine handguard I currently have. However, I now am wondering if I can do that or if I will have to go to a free float - I have a handguard cap that I thought would fit in front of the gas block, but because it is a set screw, will it be able to hold the handguards?

Well, thats a relief - I kept looking up pics of AR's with these gas blocks, and I did not see any with regular handguards and a slip on gas block. Obviously, I should have looked a little harder...

My god, sometimes I feel like such a door knob! I ordered a carbine length gas tube from Brownells (part # 430 000 508), and after I sent it, I measured the gas tube on my 16" barrel (it was around 9"). I had posted a question on the site asking what the actual length was of the tube, and they replied it was 16"...WTF??? I thought carbine gas tubes fit all the shorter barrels...did they answer my question incorrectly, or did I order the wrong gas tube?
