| I want one of BCM's lightweight middys with a 13" VTAC extreme handguard and a pinned gas block. BCM does not offer this configuration. I could buy the standard upper with FSB, shave it down, and then install the handguard myself. Only problem is I've never tinkered with an upper group like this, hell I have never assembled one, so the fear of screwing something up is there. Then there is the part of me that doesn't want to go and modify a brand new upper like this. I should be getting the necessary parts this weekend. So is this a terrible plan or what? |

No it's not a dumb idea if your on budget ... I have shaved a couple of FSB before. I would recommend removing it first so as to not damage anything while you cut and grind it down. Then recoat the cut area with something let dry and put it back on .. done. Or you could keep the FSB and get you a low-pro GB and then if you changed your mind later it's no problem going back to the standard setup. Hope that helps |
| If that is what you like/want then go for it. I'm not sure how the vtac extreme mounts up but the regular vtac tube has a receiver/barrel nut assembly so you have to remove the delta ring assembly and the original barrel nut. Chopping the FSB down to low profile is pretty straightforward and is well documented so do a search if you are unsure of the procedure. If the extreme rail has its own barrel nut, then you will need an action block and an armorer's wrench to R+R the nut. If it does not, just cut off delta ring assembly with a dremel cut off wheel. Hope this helps. Good Luck. |

Gotta find some punches and I will be all set. Thanks guys. |
