I'm going to begin another build within the next few weeks, and this one is going to have a complete custom camo paint job.

I am an airbrush artist, but do not have any knowledge on what paints to use on firearms.  I realize there are the use of oils, the presence of heat, and possible solvent contact to consider.

What paints can I buy in the 4 oz. to 8 oz. jars to use in my airbrush system?

Also, do I need to spray a protective coat over the paint job when I am finished?  I am familiar with painting metal on motorcycle gas tanks, and things of this nature, but do not know about gun metal.

Thanks.

I suggest Norrell's Moly Resin.  It's nearly as durable as hard anodizing and resists almost everything except epoxy paint stripper.  Apply per their instructions and you will have excellent results.

Before this gets moved.
Model shops carry a wide range of colors.  Testors (sp) water based enamel is a POA to remove.  Flat blackish to match the rifle.  I use Rustoleum gray auto primer.  Once again no joy to remove

In all honesty, I painted my Mosin Nagant ATI's synthetic stock with spray paint from my local car shop and its worked just fine. I accidentally get Hoppe's #9 solvent on there all the time, grease, etc. and it has not worn out yet.
