Going to buy a receiver block and was wondering your guys thoughts on the subject. I can't decide, the clamshell type, or the two piece type that uses the take down pins and the rail.  Having zero experience with either, need some opinions.

Thanks

This one from Brownells works the best!!!

You can get the upper reciever action block AND the lower vise block which holds your lower great to work on your fire control, stock, buffer or even both halves together.

The only set you will ever need for the money.

Sorry guys, but why pay more for a piece of plastic from Brownells?  This set works great for much less money

Model One Action Blocks for $45

I have this set and it's always worked perfectly for any job I've needed it on.

It depends on what you want to do with the action block.  I've installed barrels using a DPMS PantherClaw block, but since then I've gotten a set of barrel vise jaws and any future barrel or flash hider installs will be done with these.  Why?  Because it completely removes any torsion from the  upper, which allows me to feel less hesitant about applying torque to the barrel nut or flash hider.  Quick note on barrel vise blocks: use something like a strip of leather or pieces of garden hose between the blocks and the barrel to get a very secure "bite" on the barrel.

Thanks for the input guys.  Can't wait to get started. I've owned and own several different AR's, (should have kept the early ones). But have never built one myself, should be fun.  I'm going to get the Form 1 going and SBR the receiver, while I'm waiting I'll start putting together my pile of parts!.

thats a good call on the model 1 clamshell. we use the brownells one in the armory when we need to do a rebarrel.  the chances of messing up a locating pin are all but non existent when using this type over the barrel vice.  I have rebarreled hundreds of M16s and m4s with the clamshell and not one has ever went wrong with that clamshell.

I'm curious how you could mess up the pin using a barrel vise.  Don't you just put the barrel in the vise then fit the receiver onto it?  Or am I missing something?
