Quick question. Im about to purchase a new upper and wanted to get one that has the m4 feed ramps. Will these align correctly with the ones on my barrel or are there different sizes or does it vary by company?

Generally they are one size.  Any variance will just be between the upper brand and the barrel extension.  In other words there are not different sizes.  If your barrel has an M4 extension an M4 ramped upper will fit.  If it doesn't you want to buy a non M4 ramped upper.

how do you tell if your barrel has the m4 extension?

The two ramps are cut deeper.  You should be able to see their cuts if looking at the extension from the side.

If your old upper had two little ramps then there is a good chance the barrel has an M4 extension.  If it didn't have the ramps then it's likely the barrel doesn't have an M4 extension.

Here is a picture to help out:

BTW:  You can use a non ramped upper with either type barrel.

You shouldn't use a ramped upper with a non M4 cut barrel.

If you don't know what the barrel is a non ramped upper is the best bet.

well damn, my barrel doesnt have m4 feed ramps...can m4 ramps be cut into a barrel with rifle feed ramps? Or am I SOL without getting a new barrel or do they even make that big of a difference?

I'm sure it can be done.  Personally I wouldn't worry about it, but your choice.  Check with ADCO or wait until somebody else comes along with a response.

Look at your old upper.  If you don't have brass marks on the upper just below the ramps from bullet tips hitting it then chances are you never needed M4 ramps.
