I just finished assembling a my first CAR-15 type rifle last week. I used a ShARps lower, double star lower parts kit, AR Stoner collaspable buttstock and a DPMS 16" flat top upper, all from Midway. Total cost is $685.

All the parts and pieces assembled just fine on the ShARps lower, and the upper is nice and tight. All of these parts and pieces are not high end, but they all seem to work well together. Fired 100 rnds of reloads and 200 rnds of M193 ball through it without any issues.

Off hand, with mil sights, I was able to easily hit a paper plate at 100 m. Not spectacular, but good enough to hit haji at that range.

This rifle might not be a top of the line item, I enjoyed assembling it and learning how it all works.

This forum was a huge help in the "how to" section.

Thank You all.

Good evening Merlin1650, all.

Welcome to the forum and to build ARs.

The pic demands are rather tongue-in-cheek references begging you to post pics.

We love pics and range reports.

The ~1% of ARF.COMers who are (or see themselves as) professional operators kinda' scoff at what they consider "low-end" or "hobby" builds. But I personally greatly enjoy "hobby" shooting and just plain 'ol plinking.

There is another small group of posters who are getting ready for what I consider the "Great Zombie Wars of 2012."
These guys want (and are willing to take out a second mortgage on their house to pay for) a weapons system which is rated at 65,000 dead zombies as opposed to our lowly plinkers being good for a measly 20,000.

Oh and post pics. Photobucket.com is a place where you can create an album and format your personal pics into jpegs to plug them into this site.

Starting at the bottom of page 4 are some pics of my ShARps AR project (mine's the 'gold colored' one)  (see link below)…

...Style-wise I shooting for “anachronistic” as if (the real) Sharps Arms was somehow producing ARs’ back in the 1800’s due to some weird rift in the space/time continuum...  Hey what can I say, I’m a big fan of “Lost”...

Interesting rifle, hope it shoots better than it looks...

And welcome, ummm... BOTH of you?  To Arfcom, or are you the same person?

Hmmm, ...ouch!

I was heeding the words of Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, “…one should never fear the use of fanciful, yet tasteful, use of unexpected vibrant colors in one’s designs…”  And nope, WAPump and I (762CETME), are different people…

I'll find out if it shoots well tomorrow afternoon.  It should I hope, it has a 20” 416 Stainless Steel, 1in8 DPMS barrel…

Is it just me or does that fsb look alot higher than the rear sight.

It's an optical illusion (I suppose).  I modified my front gasblock by removing the lower portion of its hypotenuse  leg and then MIG welding a piece of 1020 1/4"  round stock in its place.  Triangular gasblocks look all the same so I wanted to do something different…

thank you (assuming that was directed at me)! pretty soon i'll have my own build to show off too––RRA lower with Stag 2H upper. Her optic shall be a Leupold CQ/T (my bro's lending it to me––he bought it for his tour in iraq and afghanistan, but he's out now).

Pretty is as Pretty does. If she shoots great, who cares if it looks differant. To use Willies line, He's not wrong, he's just differant.

Make it work!

I actually think that looks pretty amazing.  It's nice to see a 'different' version from the usual rifle that most of us tend to own (or at least used to own before the boating tragedy of 2010).

Thanks All!(?)  You guys are very ‘diplomatic’…  I especially got a kick out the “Make it work!”  line above, Tim Gunn would be proud!

Sunday afternoon I started breaking in its barrel by the “one-shot-and-mop-it-out” process.  I’m going to run 10 more rounds through it by this method and then sight it in and see how it groups @ 100 yards.  The reaction to it at my club on Sunday was "mixed" w/ very strong polarization between the “I love it!” and “I hate it!” camps…

Well, it seems that most you guys may not like its styling but it can shoot!  (Not quite as well as a TNW I just finished up too that's freakishly accurate...)  From Fiocchi 40 grain V-max .223 I’ve getting groups like the one pictured below and from M193 It’s been producing 1.5MOA 10 shot groups too.

not hating, but what made you decide to choose that color?

Two reasons I suppose.

First and foremost, I simply wanted to build something bizarrely anachronistic because of its “Sharps” name.  The first thing that I think of when I think of "Sharps Arms" are .45 or .50 caliber rolling block buffalo rifles from the mid-1800's.

The secondary reason was that I was aware that if you broil a black anodized aluminum finish at 600+ degrees for over an hour it will turn bronze colored…

broil?  not bake?  LOL, and does that in any way affect the anodizing or metal qualities in any way other than color?

Why the 4 scope rings too?  Is that the recommended way of using a scope that long from the manufacturer?

The reason that stated “broil” opposed to “bake”  is solely because my old Tappan oven won’t go over 600 degrees unless it is set on “broil”…  The critical thing is to hit 610-625 degrees or so and keep it there for around an hour for the color change to occur.  The metal’s attributes will be unaffected at that temperature too.  For all steel and aluminum materials you’d have to hit more like 1000F to 1200F degrees (and hold it at that temperature for a considerable length of time) before before you’d even start approaching any of their phase transitional points where the material itself is mechanically affected.  As for the anodizing's durability, it’s also unaffected; it seems to remain as durable as when it was ‘black.’

And lastly as for the scope rings and mount, they're just some real cheapies that I ‘broiled up’ from CDNN Sports...
