I was looking at A R barrel assy. parts diagram, shows barrel extension––––––-not sure what that means, is that something separate for barrel or what, list it for $22.50, what am I looking at in diagram, rear part of barrel or something separate

It's usually already installed on barrels when you buy them. It's the part that the bolt locks into.

That is what I thought, my barrel has it, it is actually the back end of barrel where bolt goes in and rotates to lock up,  just hadn't seen a barrel with out this extension before,

Most AR barrels come finished and already have the barrel extension mounted, unless its a blank. It is sort of a gunsmith only thing. I think it has to be done before the gas port can be drilled.

It is the threaded end cap that mounts to the chambered end of the barrel. It provides the properly headspaced area that the bolt locks into.
