i know everyone has had this problem with thier first build. i have a stripped lower reciever and want to build it this month. i really think it would be cool to have a 10.5 inch upper and sbr it. but i also really want to build one with a 20 inch barrell. i keep leaning more and more to the 10.5 because i could shoot carbine classes this year. but once i register the lower as an sbr i will not be able to go to ky anytime i want and shoot.
whats everyones opion?

Assuming you were planning on getting an extra 20' upper to swap out on your lower, I'd say just go out and buy another lower. You can get a full lower for pretty cheap (relatively), and the cost will be worth the headache it saves.

Check out Spike's for stripped lowers, they have a sale for $99, throw in a LPK for $70, stock of your choice, buffer and springs, and you're g2g.

I built a full lower with Vltor stock this way for about $400. But you can definitely go cheaper.
