this might sound silly but I have one of these laying on my desk:
DCM TUBE I think this could be made to use as a hand gaurd it ia about 1 1/4" diameter(cut to what ever length you want and finished out) but there would have to be a gas tube cover made. I am pretty sure I could do all of this work in our shop if interested. We build a lot of strange cusom stuff here. The other option is pick an inexpensive HG(used and abused is good for this) and cut it an lighten it. This is one I cut in rifle length, it weighs less than half of what it did, it will be anodized bright green for My wife's match rifle.
