I am a complete newbie to the black rifle world, but am now making the plunge. ( I have lots of guns, just no black ones )  I just bought 4 stripped lowers (Spike's Tatical) which I will be playing with over the next year or so.  For my first ever AR15 I was thinking of just buying a kit.  I was looking at this one http://www.del-ton.com/Rifle_Kit_p/rkt100.htm and was wondering what your thought were on it?  I am going to eventually build a high end gun, but first I need to save a few pennies.  Is this gun fine for a plinker and an occasional coyote shoot, or is there something else you experts would recommend?  Thanks in advance for any and all input.

Welcome! That's a good basic kit, and you could upgrade to 1:7 chrome, get a carry handle, M4 handguards, M4 feedramps, and a 2 stage trigger. Although I am thinking that many people will recommend a mid length kit.

I say go with the standard carbine legnth or mid legnth kit.  The only upgrades you really need are a chrome lined barrel and some type of rear sight (carry handle or buis).  I built a rifle with a standard carbine legnth Del-Ton kit with a chrome lined barrel and it is capable of shooting better than my own ability.  Definitly KISS for your first build.

Whats the advantage of going with a chromed lined barrel?  Also, what about a mid length or standard carbine?  I know there are upgrades I can choose and one of them is the chromed line barrel for an extra $45.  What do you think?

I'll have to R+ Del-Ton.  When doing my first bits and pieces build I ended with a rifle length buffer spring instead of the carbine length I needed.  I bought a carbine spring from Del-Ton and it shipped for 70 cents.  Damn few folks out there nowdays that will sell you a $3.95 part without bending you over on shipping.  Del-Ton will get more business from me.

The advantages and disadvantages are debatable and you could spend a fair number of days reading posts on this site about it.  Basically chrome lining adds wear resistance to the barrel.  It can also lead to reduced accuracy though.  For $50 extra I didnt' get chrome lined on my kit from Del-Ton.  If I shoot it enough to wear out the barrel, replacing it will pale in comparison to the amount of ammo I bought.

Do some searching around and see which option you like better.

Thanks for the reply's.  I'm still looking, but so far it sounds like a decent first AR.  I notice on their order page they have a spot for a coupon code.  Does anyone know what the code is?  I was told there was an AR15.com coupon code, but I can't find it.  Any ideas???  Thanks!

Sign up for an account with them, then send them an email on THIS WEBSITE telling them you signed up for an account.  When you go to checkout, (after they confirm your discount), you'll see your discount reflected.  It's something like $10 discount for those kits.  I just went through this last week.  They responded within 24hrs.

I think you may have to be an AR15.com (furthermore known as "arfcom") paying member though.
