I am wanting to get an upper for precision and long range work. Due to the parts I would like to use, I have been really thinking about building the upper myself. This will be my first build, since this is the case can I expect as much accuracy from the rifle as if it was factory built? Another option I have is to get the parts myself and have it sent off to be assembled, but I would like to learn to build my own.

In a nutshell, can I build a super accurate upper on my first time if I use quality parts?

Also, does anyone know if the LMT defender lowers come with m4 feed ramps?

Accuracy comes in many forms. Being your 1st build or your millionth build makes no difference. It will either work or it wont, its not hard to ASSEMBLE an AR.

The parts are what will make the difference along with your ability to shoot.

Get a good SS barrel and free float it. Get a good trigger, I like single stage Timney trigger but some like 2 stage setups.

Next would be the glass and mount. If you arent going to be taking a scope off, get a more permanent mount, not the quick release setups.

Get a good stock, not a small carbine one, beefier stock will help you hold your postion better.

Little things like heavier buffer help with recoil and slowing the bolt down. Get a FA BCG, they are heavier and will help things.

Lowers dont have feed ramps, Its the UPPER and the BARREL Extensions that do. M4 feedramps have nothing to do with accuracy but how the bullets get fed into the chamber. You can have Upper without and barrel with, but you can not have it the other way around, best to stick with M4 feedramps on both parts.

Next would be ammo. Depending on what kind of groups and distance you shooting determines your ammo. Obviously if you want the most accurate you need to handload. Otherwise maybe check out Hornady or Blackhills (not sure of any other match type ammo).

And finally, all those parts dont mean much if you cant shoot worth a shit. So practice the basics of marksmanship (breathing, trigger discipline, grip, etc etc )

you can easily build your first gun to be much more accurate than you will be capable of shooting it.  Build and enjoy.
