New to all this building your own stuff. I bought a Daniel Defense barrel from Bravo Co. It was on sale and had gotten pretty good reviews.  Here is the description.

Daniel Defense 16" M4 Carbine Gas Barrel Stripped 1/7 Twist

I'm assuming that I can use this barrel either with a piston system (Osprey, CMMG, Adams Arms) or I can also use it as a direct impingement rifle.

Is this correct? Also is the 16 inch barrel considered a mid length?

Thanks in advance. Looking forward to the build.

BTW,I have ordered the Spikes Tactical billet upper and lower and I bought the Magpul UBR stock. No handguards and so forth yet. Have to wait on the funds to build up again.

I got the same barrell two days ago.  Great barrel for 169 clams!!!.  I too was considering the piston system for my current first build till I talked to the experts in here.  They consider the piston systems to be the flavor of month.  And I quote "If the original AR platform has worked this well for this long... why fix it?"  I'm putting my 300 clam piston money towards better optics.  A.C.O.G.'s are not cheap!!!

Cheers

If it is made for an AR and you have an AR then you can put it on your rifle.  I assume that you are trying to figure out what piton setup/gas tube you will need or that you are looking for forearms due to you mid length question.  Carbine length is typically what you will look for with a 16" barrell if you are shopping for gas/piston setup but make sure that gas port isn't drilled to a different length (I think that some 16" barrells can come with rifle length ports drilled but I haven't come across any so I am not sure).  Forearms can be bought in multiple lengths depending on how much rail you want/need vs. how much weight that you are willing to tote around.

Wildomar and KC,

Thanks for the repies. One question was "is the 16 considered a mid length"? I did not want a rifle length so I figured the 16" was a good compromise.  I was also going to do the piston system but I'm thinking about doing this one as DI and try it first. I also need to save some money towards optics.

Next I need to get a bolt group and a lower parts kit and so forth. Should be fun, I'm looking forward to it. I hate waiting but funds are not there right now for everything. Was looking at the BCM bolt group with the ionbond finish. I also looked at the Titanium nitrided one but it is quite a bit higher. Might try that on down the road.

No. The barrel you purchased is a carbine length gas system.

Cashflow,

The term midlength doesn't refer to the length of the barrel.  It refers to the distance between the end of the barrel and the gas port.

The standard 16" barrel would have a carbine length gas system.  A mid length gas system has the gas port 2" further.  Here is a link that explians the differnece.

BTW, you got a great deal on a high quality barrel.
