Ladies and Gentlemen,
It seems I've been bitten by the AR bug. Looking to build/assemble a KISS carbine and have put together a parts list. Would like to get some feedback on any omissions, compatibility or pricing issues you might see. My goal is not platform or price focused; rather, I'd like to buy components in a manner that , upon review of our monthly expenditures, did not gain the attention of my beautiful and very pregnant bride. Hell hath no fury...
This is what I've come up with so far (all prices are estimates based on internet & gun show list): Upper: CMMG 16" MedCon carbine ($585) Lower: Spikes's ($100) Stock: Magpul MOE ($60) Handguard: Magpul MOE ($30) Trigger: RRA 2 stage ($120) Grip: Magpul MOE ($21) Trigger Guard: MOE ($9) Rear Site: DD A1.5 ($70) Buffer Assy: Spikes ($60) LPK: DD ($70) or Del-Ton ($55) I'll need to account for FFL transfer and shipping on various parts, let's say 10% to be safe. Should keep it around $1200 for a basic, good quality platform from which I can choose to improve upon or use dollar bills to heat the house. Suggestions are welcome! P.S.-I already have a sling and mags. |

Maybe you should look at using the RRA LPK with the 2 stage you might save a few $$$$$
RRA LPK & 2 Stage Maybe you can find it cheaper somewhere else |

| This should be a good deal to cover a few things on your list....that is, if you're cool buying the two-stage separate like you originally planned... |

Don't be afraid to use tools! Some parts may require polishing, light sanding or filing. I swear I cannot tell one trigger from another after who knows how many rounds with each. Same thing a couple weeks ago - shooting with my buddies Stag, he'd installed a 2-stage. Just couldn't tell - at least not enough to justify expense - IMO. AR-Stoner makes a fine all - stainless steel LPK. Trigger group that comes with it is quite nice, even / smooth pull - just my opinion. Like 65 - 70 at Midway. You'll need the savings to buy KNS anti-walk pins anyhow (you may not need them, sometimes you do, sometimes you don't) - but if you do need them, better to have those than a 2-stage trigger. Your build. I also recommend getting the ACE SOCOM stock in lieu of the Magpul - IMHO, far better piece of hardware. Pictures do not do these things justice, it's machined aluminum, no slop - they're tight. When you do math on that, it's about the same cost as it comes with Buffer tube - JSE Surplus has decent price on older version: http://www.jsesurplus.com/acesocom5positonstockshort.aspx. Takes a few minutes to properly fit these (a small file is all you need - needs a notch for buffer detent - blah blah - if you get one I'll take a pic.). Have fun! |

Just couldn't tell - at least not enough to justify expense - IMO. You make an interesting point. I really hadn't put too much thought into the trigger. I know for my hunting rifles I prefer a 3 lb. pull with no creep. At the local fun show some vendors let me try different 1 and 2 stage triggers. I didn't like most of the single stage triggers I tried, too much creep w/nondescript breakpoint. Therefore I figured the 2-stage was the way to go. Tried the RR 2 stage and liked it. Now that I think about it, I should consider what I'm actually using this carbine for. Fun mostly. A stock trigger might work just fine. I had two service issued A2s I was intimate with. One trigger was great and the other I hated. Might just try what comes in the LPK and and put the $ towards another upgrade. If the trigger sucks I can break out the tools. |

A good idea, nothing against the 2-stages - it is after all a personal choice (I'm not going to be shooting with your gun). But, that's 100+ bucks you may decide not to spend right there. That can be more ammo for testing - KISS bro, KISS. |

I do like the ACE stock and had a chance to handle one in the past. Much sturdier than the MOE. Who doesn't like a firearm with built-in hammer?
Other than the slight filing mod, what would I need to make the ACE work? Buffer, spring, etc. ? When my wife does figure out what I'm doing, I can write it off as a really expensive hammer. |
