I'm trying to remove the FSB on my AR-15 and successfully got one of the taper pins out but the other one won't budge at all. After multiple tries, I think I altered the shape of the pin. I live in Hawaii and I've called three of the gun shops here and none of them will do this. One of the store owners said that he uses a blow torch and then punches them out, any experiences with this? Would using a drill help?
Thanks |

Pick up the Brownells FSB block mentioned in the link above. These can be a pain to get out.
And hit them out from the left of the rifle, not the ejection side as mentioned. Go to THIS LINK and download the hand guard video |

Which side you're hammering from depends on the mfg. Stag is backward from everybody else. But if you got one pin out, you're already going in the right direction.
A little heat can go a LONG way. You can also try putting it in the freezer for a few hours prior. As others have mentioned, having the correct block is very helpful. Get a BFH, and show it who's boss. It'll come out eventually. |
| Im hitting them out left to right. Tried again after work and no luck. The roll pin punch are just making indents, deforming, and digging into the taper pin now. I'm installing a new low profile gas block so I don't care what happens to this one. I saw the block from Brownells but will it fit on there if I have a Daniel Defense quad rail? I'll try the heating thing tomorrow... |
| I usually use a BFH (Big Fucking Hammer) and a big ass 5/16 punch to get it flush that usually gets it going. But I have had them still stick even when moved with the 5/16 punch. Just keep beating on it, it will eventually move. I've also had the most luck using my concrete floor as a base. My steel and wooden workbenches were insufficient. |
