How big of a vise do I need to accept a vise block?

not very.  4 inch should be fine.

Thanks.

Go with a 6" vise if you can afford it-that extra couple of inches translates into a larger, heavier and more stable base to work from.  I have a 4 1/2" vise that I do my AR work with, and it's adequate for most things, but tough barrel nuts are tougher because I don't have the stability I would with a bigger vise.

Is it not bolted down?

Just wondering, do you have that Vise bolted down?  :)

Of course it's bolted down.  But a wider vise holds more solidly than a narrower vise.  I've also built a substantially beefier bench since the last time I removed a barrel nut, but I'd still upgrade my vise the next time I need to change out a barrel.
