I'm fairly new to AR's, so try to bear with me. I'm looking to build my first AR and I found good prices on some Del-Ton kits, but what what I want to know is, what are some pros/cons to having a lightweight upper kit? Is it made of a thinner material, therefore it being weaker? I've searched everywhere for answers before deciding to ask here. I have a Spike's lower and LPK and now only need the upper half, preferably 16' in length, just in case that helps. I appreciate the input.

The only thing "thinner" on the kit is the barrel (not counting the .625 FSB).  Unless you're dumping mag after mag of sustained fire, IMHO you're probably not going to notice much of a difference.
Pros:

  • Ease of carrying

  • Swings quicker between targets

  • Easier for most females to shoot (my wife doesn't like shooting my M4gery with light, VFG, Aimpoint, rails, etc.)

Cons:

  • Barrel may heat up quick with rapid fire

If you really want to go lightweight, combine the LW kit with a CavArms polymer lower.  My wife loves hers.  Weighs in around 6lb with light and magazine...

Can any moderator please move this to the Uppers section? Thanks.

isn't the spikes lower heavier than a stag lower? reason I state this is that spikes lowers are setup for semi only. the stag is not. I have both & the spikes has more materisl around the selector so that you can't put an auto selector in it. even though it has safe/semi/auto on the side of the receiver. please ring in if I am wrong.thanks

A thinner barrel CAN (not always) be a bit less accurate than a heavier barrel because of harmonics, but not a huge difference, and the thinner barrel will still be combat accurate.

Before you order a lightweight kit from Del-Ton you might want to call them on their wait times. Those kits were backordered for a long time.  Mark

If you can not find a kit, build your own upper with a Bushmaster SuperLight barrel.  Here is the 6 pound rifle I made for my wife using that barrel on a Cav Arms polimer lower.

Everything in pink was painted with Duracoat.

I don't think anybody makes a kit as light as I wanted. Here's my take on lightweight. Not sure if I can make it any lighter without removing the bayo lug and sling swivel.

+1...

A lightweight barrel on a CAV Arms lower makes a nice, light gun.

Del-Ton's Black Friday Deal is 10% off everything, excluding shipping.

Good way to get a kit, and at a great price too

del ton lightweight barrels are still on back order i;ve been waiting almost 8 months for mine they say a minimum of 2 more weeks till they show up. personally im a fan of light rifles i dont think the heat disapation benefits of a heavier barrel are important in a semi auto rifle and in my experience unless your shooting matches there isnt enough of a difference in accuracy between the barrel profiles to make a difference,  another great light weight option is fluted barrels, im thinkin about usin one of those for my next build.

Thanks for the info on Del-Ton. I'm trying to find a way to NOT wait any more than a couple weeks. 8 months for a lightweight kit is definitely too long...

I just rec'd a lightweight, fluted barrel from J&T.  Ordered it in early May.  I can't believe how light it is.  Went with a 16" barrel and YHM lightweight handguard.  First kit I got was 16" CAR.  Seems noticably heavier.  I haven't finished the l/w rifle yet so there's no good comparison.  Maybe I oughta hang a full mag from it when finished for a true comparison.
