thanks

Your best bet is to get a 9mm flattop upper and modify the upper by adding the hole for the gas tube and the inlet for the bolt cam pin. Get the stripped upper and add a standard port door assembly.

Sun Devil,, but it's not a standard shape - some rail systems won't fit it.

ETA:  The rail is standard height, the side shape is different.

+1, the last six 9mm uppers I received from Rock River has the cam pin cut.

Heres a Model 1 Sales 9mm upper that I drilled the gas tube hole drilled in.  Accepts the normal, full-sized eject port door.  Makes for a nice clean, lighter weight installation by eliminating the useless FA and shell deflector.  Complies with M4 rail height specs.

Russ,

I am intrigued.  That's exactly what I'm looking for.  How did you get the deflector off and what did you have to drill?  How did you drill what you drilled?  I have limited tools.

You can buy the 9mm receiver stripped:

As Harlan mentioned, to use as a 5.56 receiver you'll need to make sure the cam pin rotation area is milled out:

I think most will be - the one pictured came from Model 1 and is reportedly of Stag manufacture.

You'll also need a hole drilled for the gas tube:

ADCO's done a couple for me - $30 IIRC.

Works just fine as a DI receiver:

Those look great.  They would probably make great .22 uppers, too.

What do you mean?  Is it as strong as a .223/5.56 receiver?  Please elaborate..

Here's a couple of more pics of the one I converted to a DI system.

Yes, the upper is okay to use in an .223/5.56 caliber assembly. The converted 9mm receiver has the same dimensions as a standard A3 upper but without the housing for the forward assist and without the shell deflector.
A similar upper design with a carry handle can be seen in the A1 upper.
