There was a thread last week or so that someone posted a picture or link of a cheap sandblaster from HarborFreight (I think).  It had a hopper on the top of the gun.  It might have been over on the refinishing forum but I thought I'd start here first.  Sound familiar to anyone?  I couldn't find the post or the gun on HB.  Any help would be great.  Thx.

I bought this gun a month ago.   Pure POS.   Hopper holds about 15 seconds of sand, and the nozzle hole is too big to get any decent velocity, to do any serious work on steel.

For $14, it wasn't worth the drive to return it, so it went into the trash bin.  HF makes a larger gun of similar design.   I had to rework it to get acceptable results.

good luck.

I've used this one Spot blaster for the last year and while it doesn't hold much material [I use Black Diamond from Tractor supply] as long as you aren't trying to remove heavy rust it works well. It's been used on several Duracoated pieces and it along with the black diamond beats up the surface enough for good adhesion.
It's a pain in the backside to use but it beats buying a blast cabinet and a large compressor.

The blaster you are referring too is a spot blaster and should be used as such. I bought one thinking it would at least clean 3''x3'' spots on a fuel tank...the gun cost $20, the media was about $10/20lbs(x3). I made the biggest mess ever and didnt get the job done. If you buy this gun, make sure you have a box built and a way to catch and reuse your media and too keep it clean. Also, it will only shoot that aluminum oxide er whatever media.

However, it is a POS. It loves to clog and runs out of media VERY quickly.

Add me to the "bought one and regretted it" list. And I wasn't even trying to use it for some vast expanse like 3x3".

I'd like to read that original thread and see what the guy was doing that he actually found that thing useful for. Was he building an air-powered hourglass?

I got one from Harbor Freight with the media container was under the gun and not gravity fed.  I think it was in the $20-$30 range.  The container is pretty big and the system works well for small projects.  I've done barrels, gas blocks, lowers and uppers.  A cabinet would be nice but I don't use it enough so its cheaper to buy new media for now.  I can't find the one I have on their website.

Thanks, that's the one, but after reading some of the feedback in the post, I'm second guessing my thought on getting it.  Basically I intended to get it to rough up a SS barrel and strip small parts.

I just went thru this myself. I bought the gravity feed spot blaster and returned it for the Portable Abrasive Blaster Kit. I saw no reason to have 15 feet of media hose so I cut a 5 foot section off and used it with the unit sitting on a saw horse. Absolutely no complaints other than the mess that was laying on painters plastic. Media loss was 30%.

Think Safety when Blasting. You can really fuck yourself up. If you can feel any media in your teeth, it's going into your lungs as well.

I have pic's of my mess if needed. I used knee boots, a cheap poncho, looong abs gloves, face shield, dust mask and a fan.
