I am changing out the barrel on an AR-15 but am having problems with removing the gas tube.  I am using a breech block and support, so the bolt group is removed.  I have removed the set role pin in the from the front site.  Is it common for the tube to be in so tight (once it has been fired) that you damage it removing it?

Yes.

There is carbon blowby that is making it stick. I have seen a tool somewhere (ADCO maybe?) that grasps the tube and affords leverage to break it loose and pull it out. You might try penetrating oil if you're not in a big hurry, other wise crush this tube and install a new one.

Yes, that is why they make a gas tube removal tool that clamps on the tube, so you can apply sufficient rotation force to break it free.

Gently grab it with a pair of pliers and work it back and forth (rotating the GT).

If you end up squeezing too hard it's only $10-$15 to replace the gas tube.

Kroil is my go-to penetrating oil.

And yep, I've had this problem before.  I was able to tap the back of the gas tube (inside the upper) with small picture frame hammer.  It must've broken it loose as the gas tube came out without issue.

Just buy a new one(cheap part) and yank that sucker outta there. Might as well get a new pin while you're at it.

Wrap a spot on the tube with electric tape. Clamp lightly on the taped area with some pliers. Tap on the pliers with a small hammer. Worked for me.

Thanks for the help.  I will give some of the tips a try.

i ran into this problem last week....i tried to do it gently but it would not budge....
so i clamped it down with an adjustable clamping style wrench and beat the shit out of the wrench...
the upper was in a Brownells upper block in my vise....

it came out but it scratched/gouged the shit outta the gas tube... so i ordered 2 new ones
from Bravo Company.  They came within 2 days and BC threw in the roll pins for free....

all is good now....
